Figure Review: Sideshow Samwise Gamgee

It can be argued that the Hobbits are the main characters of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and rightfully so!

Sideshow Collectibles announced 2 Hobbit 12-inch scale figures, Samwise Gamgee and Frodo Baggins in mid 2007 and it took slightly more than a year before eager collectors like I get to lay my hands on these Hobbits!

I pre-ordered both my Hobbit figures direct from Sideshow Collectibles and they were shipped to me in July 08.

Accessories

The Samwise Figure comes with many delightful accessories. Among these are a cooking pot, 2 frying pans of different sizes and a ladle and sausage links! These are definitely not critical to the overall figure but their inclusion is such a good bonus for the collector!

In addition to his pot and pans, Sam’s other accessories include the Weathertop Sword and Scabbard, a Lothlorien cloak with elven broach, a pipe, a backpack, a haversack and a water skin with strap. And not forgetting that the Exclusive Edition comes with Lembas Bread as well.

That is a lot of stuff for a small Hobbit to carry! Even if one is not into Hobbit figures, just the amount of accessories that come with it is reason enough for a collector to throw in USD$70 to get this lovely figure.

Head Sculpt

The head sculpt is simply wonderful. The paint work is applied correctly and it is a pleasure just to hold this figure in your hand and admire the sculpt which in itself is a piece of art.

Overall Figure

Figure poseability is good considering that this is the first time a small-scale body is used. Despite the body having some “split shin” issues, this is not really a major problem. One could easily fix this problem or simply display the figure with the “split shins” strategically covered by some cloak or a backpack.

Overall Rating

This is by far the best 12-inch Figure that Sideshow Collectibles has released from the LOTR line. The head sculpt is wonderful, the choice of fabric for the clothing is spot on, the new small-scale body did not disappoint and the load of accessories that Sideshow packed into this figure is a wonderful bonus to every collector of 12-inch figures.

And I am seriously considering buying a second piece of this figure just to lay my hands on the wonderful accessories and also the small-scale body for my future kit-bash use.

Overall, I rate this figure a 4.5 out of 5 (4.5/5).
